My career

I started my studies at the IUT génie civil in La Rochelle. After these 2 years, I enrolled in a Bachelor (Hons) in Civil Engineering at Napier University in Edinburgh, alternating with Carbon Dynamic, a modular timber construction company in the north of Scotland called Carbone Dynamic.

For 3 years, I worked as architectural coordinator, design for manufacture and assembly, quality control and on-site coordination for multiple projects. Matt Stevenson, the company's founder, was a particularly innovative and ambitious person when it came to the projects undertaken by Carbone Dynamic, especially for modular wood construction, which at the time was quite unique in the industry. The projects undertaken were diverse: connected convalescent homes (Dalmore), luxury architect-designed houses (Loch Nedd House), low-cost houses for the reintegration of homeless people in Edinburgh (Social Bite Village) and luxury hotels and student accommodation (Dyson Village), for example...

At the end of my Bachelor's degree, I continued my studies with a research Master's degree at Laval University in Quebec. At CIRCERB (Chaire Industriel de Recherche pour la Construction Éco-Responsable en Bois), which was founded by Pierre Blanchet. With the aim of developing the local market, my research focused on analysing the regulatory constraints on exporting Quebec products to the United States within 1,000 km of the border. These 2 years of research enabled me to develop my knowledge of the Quebec timber construction market and to discover the world of research in an industrial context.

At the same time, Maxime Garcia, my mentor at Carbon Dynamic, asked me to join the design team for the manufacture and assembly of Element5, a CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) producer based in Saint Thomas, Ontario, with offices in Toronto. This company also provides cost expertise in design, engineering and assembly to support the new players in solid wood construction in Ontario.

So for 5 months I worked part-time on top of my studies to produce design drawings for the production and assembly of projects in this company to support the technical team. A few months before the end of my master's degree, I put my work at Element5 on hold to finish my dissertation properly. In July 2021, I made the jump from Université Laval to Element5 full-time.

Element5 enabled me to organise my thinking about my work in relation to the Carbone Dynamic start-up where I had previously worked. I was able to see all the pitfalls of innovation in the construction sector for engineers and architects through dozens of projects over the course of my 3 years with the company.
